It may be that that focus and awareness you get from meditation plays a role in us noticing these spiritual phenomenon and sensations. These things happen to all of us all the time, but because so many of us humans have our minds scattered/focused in all these different places in the "physical" aspect of the universe, it becomes difficult to pay attention to what's going on with us on a spiritual level, which is the core level of our being.
Meditation (And sleep) put you in a state where physical stimuli is ignored, and all that is left is the core essence. This is absolutely true with sleep as you have zero attention to what's going on in the physical world around you. This may explain why spiritual experiences, when sleeping, are much more vivid and intense compared to when you meditate, because you still have some awareness of the world around you while meditating since your focus may wander to an itch for some seconds or a sound you heard in your closet. But, I think the more consistent you are with meditating, the easier it will be for you to consciously put yourself in deeper states of focus/trance, allowing for even more vivid spiritual experiences without having to sleep. This ability to stay centered may translate in you having more spiritual sensations and experiences even when you are doing simple tasks like jogging, driving your car or anything else like that.
It's like a muscle. The more we access and use this side of ourselves, the more prominent it will become over our physical sensations, and the easier it will be for us to make decisions based off of our core essence as opposed to instinct, fear and other sensations associated with our physical bodies.
Consistent meditation will lead to stronger spiritual experiences no matter what you're trying to achieve, just because of the increased awareness of yourself; your true self.
